Tae Gon Kim (KOR) – The Dresses

Event Introduction
“I want to be one, I want it to me as if we were united, enclosed in the same bag of skin, clothing being the smooth envelope of the coalescing material which is actually my imaginary lover.”
– Roland Barthes, A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments
When we love someone deeply, we want to be them, to become one with them. Tae Gon Kim’s work invites us to imagine that we become the people we love. The large-scale dresses he creates by fibre optics and LED lights appear big enough to be worn by one or more people. The clothing creates a shape for a relationship, inviting you to try it out. An image is reflected onto the dress, a possible reflection of what we want to be. As if we were wearing our own desires. The dresses are at their most brilliant together.
Tae Gon Kim is a South Korean artist, draftsman and designer who lives in Strasbourg, France. Kim has studied visual and spatial arts extensively and his works have featured in exhibitions and festivals of light around the world since 2009.
