Jere Suontausta (FI) – Peilipöllö (Bubo speculus) II
Event Introduction
Mirrorowl (Bubo speculus) II is a fictive-dystopian bird species and a sculptural light art work realized almost entirely using found and recycled materials. The materials of the work include such things as broken museum light reflectors, a wine goblet, napkin holders, Czechoslovak pastry molds, dessert dishes and other kitchenware. The sound is made by using a mirror closet door as an instrument.
Bubo speculus is both an introverted fantasy and a statement; the big-eyed owl glances at us at the verge of ecocatastrophe and mass extinction, greeting the spectator with distorted, melancholic hoots. Formerly known as a nocturnal species, the now full-time performer owl has developed a completely reflective appearance to survive amidst light pollution.
The sculpture on display is a second version of the work.
Jere Suontausta
Jere Suontausta is a multisensorially working artist based in Helsinki. In his practice he prefers to embrace both intuition and serendipity, taking often a rather non-rational approach to pottering around with found materials and light. Echoes of introverted fantasies, subconscious longing for the cosmic, kinetic charm and synaesthesia shape the experience of his works.
Suontausta declares his artistic aspiration to be pursuing something otherworldly by means of combining familiar and unknown in peculiar ways. The artworks are moments of dead matter transcending its redundancy.
Suontausta graduated as Master of Arts in 2020 from the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki, Degree Programme in Lighting Design and is a member of The Finnish Light Art Society FLASH.
Jere Suontausta’s Mirror Owl (Bubo speculus) II will also be seen in the city after Lux! Lux Helsinki and the City of Helsinki’s Urban Environment Division are starting a collaboration where the city will annually acquire 1–2 light art pieces to be placed around the city for a longer period of time for the enjoyment of residents. The final location of the artwork will be announced later.
