Responsibility

Lux Helsinki aims to offer both its visitors and organizers a responsible light art festival. We actively strive to reduce the environmental and climate impact of the event and are committed to organizing an event that is equal and safe for everyone.

ACCESSIBILITY

The artworks are located in urban spaces, and most of them are accessible. However, weather conditions may affect how easy it is to move around the installations. The event areas are plowed daily before the festival starts, depending on weather conditions.

SAFETY

Safety is a top priority for Lux Helsinki. The festival is planned in collaboration with safety professionals and authorities.

Lux installations are spread across the city, allowing visitors to enjoy light art at their own pace.

In case of crowding, our event staff will provide guidance to ensure smooth movement in the area.

EVERYONE’S LUX HELSINKI

Lux Helsinki is a discrimination-free event, and we expect all staff, artists, event partners, subcontractors, and visitors to adhere to the principles of equality, justice, and fairness.

If you witness discrimination, harassment, or inappropriate behavior during the event, please report it immediately to the nearest security officer or to the Helsinki Events Foundation via:

Emails are read by CEO Stuba Nikula, and forms are handled by Administrative Manager Piia Lääveri.

ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE

The light festival is organized with responsibility in mind. The event holds the EcoCompass environmental certificate, and we assess its environmental impact annually. Additionally, we calculate the festival’s carbon footprint.

We focus on minimizing the environmental burden and carbon footprint of energy, procurement, and logistics. We expect responsibility from our partners and subcontractors and encourage visitors to use public transport, walk, or cycle.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS AND GOALS:

  • We order only 100% renewable energy for our works.
  • The lights of the works and signage mainly operate using energy-efficient LED technology, and video projections are carried out as efficiently as possible.
  • During the event, we turn off lights in the festival area, reducing light pollution and compensating for the energy consumption of the works.
  • The carbon footprint from the event’s waste is small, only about 65 kg CO₂ equivalent. This corresponds to approximately 500 kilometers of car travel or heating an electric sauna 7.5 times (Source: OpenCo2Net).
  • We procure sustainably, use what already exists, and prefer renting rather than buying new. If we must make purchases, we avoid disposable items and invest in reusable alternatives.
  • Nothing is sold or distributed at the event.
  • We order our printed materials mainly as carbon-neutral.
  • We accommodate our guests in environmentally certified hotels.
  • Production logistics and transportation are planned as centrally as possible to avoid unnecessary transportation.
  • We commit all production partners to our responsible practices already at the contract stage.
  • We calculate the carbon footprint of the event using the City of Helsinki’s carbon footprint calculator for events.
  • The audience is encouraged to arrive on foot, by bicycle, or by public transportation.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
