Kari Kola (FI) – Just Green

Event Introduction

NB: The work can also be seen at Lux Morning on January 9–10, 2025, from 7 to 9 a.m.

In the hands of light artist Kari Kola, the wintry landscape of the Esplanade Park is transformed into a living world of green light, bringing the greenery of summer back into the midst of the cold season. The aim of the work is to bring back the greenery where it has disappeared with the winter – and to create a soothing and harmonious whole. The light covers the park in a green glow, and people can experience a colour around them that symbolises balance, security and inner peace.

Kola’s work is a painterly and meditative experience in which the colour green guides the viewer’s sensations. Green is said to enhance creativity and improve concentration. The work creates a space where city dwellers can take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in the calming effect of colour.

The work is complemented by an ambient soundscape to help viewers immerse themselves in the experience. Quiet sounds blend with the light to create an environment where people can relax and focus on the moment.

Kari Kola
“I’ve been interested in light for as long as I can remember. Light is everywhere and it affects the world and our daily lives in many ways. I’m from Finland and here the autumns and the winters last long and these seasons are very dark. I wanted to teach myself to use light to be able to utilize the darkness that surrounds me during those seasons. That’s why I became who I am. A Light Artist.” – Kari Kola
