Event Introduction

Light art spreads inside and around Puistokatu 4 as part of Lux Helsinki. The Space for Science and Hope will be crowned by the artwork Hope Signal, a light pillar projected into the night sky through the attic skylight. The artwork can be seen as a kind of beacon of hope bringing light into darkness. To some, it might resemble a superhero call signal illuminating the night sky. Either way, the piece invites visitors to explore Puistokatu 4. To build a sustainable future, we need not only superheroes but all of us.

Inside Puistokatu 4’s library, Roosa Siirilä’s animated artwork Disturbance of Consciousness is projected onto a centuries-old tiled stove. The artwork, which creates a new, lively surface on the stove, explores the relationship between humans and seaweed.

Roosa Siirilä (FI)  –  Disturbance of consciousness

”In a dream I was swimming in a lake by a cottage, when suddenly the water turned green and porridge-like. In the morning I ended up reading information about blue-green algae, and what happens when you swim in it. One of the possible consequences listed was ’disturbance of consciousness’. That phrase stuck out for me and I wanted to create a representation of that somehow. While playing with different moving textures and colors, a lava aspect came to play as well. This video work combines the two dangerous (and beautiful) elements in a confusing liquidy composition and leaves the visitor perplexed with a strange feeling, perception slightly disturbed.”
