Event Introduction

NB: The work can also be seen at Lux Morning on January 9–10, 2025, from 7 to 9 a.m.

The Slinky is a familiar toy to most cultures and generations. In this giant form it is both nostalgic and surrealistic, playfully transforming buildings and rooftops into a virtual playground. Each coil of the enormous spring is illuminated in turn to create the familiar flowing form of a Slinky tumbling end-over-end into the shadows.

The Slinky has been a popular and recognisable toy since the 1940s, and since then there have been enough made to circle the world at least 150 times. Originally the spring toy was made of metal, but for the last 40 years it is often remembered in its rainbow plastic form. Plastics have an enormous impact on the environment and have resulted in a significant amount of waste and pollution. Recycling plastic toys helps to reduce pollution and conserve natural resources by turning them into new products. If we all work together to reduce the use of non-renewable plastics, we can make a significant impact on protecting the planet.

The oversized scale of the Slinky makes the viewer feel ‘smaller’ – proportions between you and the toy are reversed as if we have somehow shrunk and ended up in Alice’s Wonderland. End Over End playfully questions our role as viewers, disrupting our usual relationship with objects and our environment.
