Event Introduction

Anni Kinnunen (FI) – Hollow

Hollow is a critical commentary on an era where altered reality is truth and where nothing can be trusted. Kinnunen manages to avoid imagery that imitates naturalness so totally that her images would never be considered real. Unnaturalness is present in them in a haunting way. They navigate precisely on the border between the beautiful and the terrifying and feel like an honest way to depict our time, where humanity has gradually distanced itself from nature, the landscape has become a stage, and humanity a role-play. What happens in the photographs and video works genuinely occurred, yet they cannot be dismissed without asking the question: what truly happened?

Anni Kinnunen
Anni Kinnunen was taking photos with a quality point-and-shoot camera already before the age of 10, and she had her own account at the local photography store. Initially, Kinnunen studied image processing in Oulu and became particularly interested in darkroom work. Today, she works and exhibits her pieces internationally. Her bodies of work are extensive and evolve over a long period. Her previous exhibition at Galleria Halmetoja was titled Safewords. The earlier series Personal Landscape was shown at ARTag Gallery. Kinnunen’s images are performative, and she appears in them herself. She has experienced the situation and been intensely present within it. A book, The Great Escape, will be published in conjunction with the exhibition, presenting a larger selection from the same series of works than the exhibition itself.
