Lin de Mol (NL/SE) – Nordic Sculpture

Event Introduction

A life-size translucent tree trunk lies on top of a pile of timber. It lights up in a strong, bright light that fades away after 10 seconds, to repeat itself in a rhythm similar to breathing.

The shape of a mount of tree logs by the side of the road is very typical in the Nordic landscape, to be seen everywhere, especially in winter. Wood here in the North means life: It provides us with warmth, shelter and financial security. Yet as living organisms we also need them for oxygen and to sustain our natural environment. These often conflicting needs are symbolized and fused together in the installation ”Nordic Sculpture”, that presents this shape as a quintessential Nordic image.

Upon a closer look, the white log is cut into 5 uneven segments, each segment the sum of the two preceding ones, according to the principle of the Fibonacci. This ancient mathematical structure ensures optimum growth in nature, and as this reference carries a critical connotation, the atmosphere of the installation is theatrical and poetic and speaks of transcendence, growth and life. The large and heavy base of the log pile carries the white light like a question mark: “Is there another way?”
