Irene Suosalo (FI) – Echo of Aalto
Event Introduction
Iittala celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Aalto vase with Echo of Aalto, a video installation by Irene Suosalo that brings the iconic form into the digital age. The work is a tribute to the enduring power of Finnish design and the progressive spirit of Aalto. The installation consists of dozens of hand-crafted loops in which scanned paper cut-outs and vase images become a living surface. The material is textured and processed with video synthesizers – a method reminiscent of creating electronic music.
The piece unfolds like a visual timeline: fiery glassworks colours at the beginning, bubbling vase forms that seem to flow inside a universe in the middle, and finally dissolving into mist – evoking movement frozen in glass. The sound design is by Markku Mishima.
