Kaisa Salmi, Isa Niiranen and students (FI) – Rauhan polku

Event Introduction

Rauhan polku (“Path of Peace”) is an immersive light art installation composed of approximately 60 different, original, and handcrafted light sculptures. The theme of peace is approached from several perspectives. Viewers can find a reference to peace in each individual artwork or in the installation as a whole, for example, through their form.

The design of the artworks emphasizes ecology, aesthetics, and ethics. The materials used are mainly recycled or even organic materials, such as old clothes, curtains, parts of broken furniture, old coffee cups, and apple tree roots. Some of the light sculptures produce sound, and one of them is interactive.

Several students from Aalto University and the University of the Arts Helsinki are participating in the realization of the artwork, under the direction of Kaisa Salmi. The students represent the departments of design, architecture, art and media, art education, and set design.

Kaisa Salmi
Kaisa Salmi has realized dozens of public and participatory, mostly temporary artworks in Finland and around the world. Working within contemporary art, she is interested in environmental issues, history, and care. She has worked as a lighting designer and visual artist in performing arts, served as artistic director of a festival in Beijing, taught and worked at Bellas Artes in Mexico City, and toured Southern Europe as a visual artist with an international collective, creating pop-up performances and installations.
