Melek Mazici (TR / FI) – Rooms of Light

Event Introduction

The recommended viewing spot for the work is from Hietalahdentori.

In 1880, Helsinki Shipyard was connected to the grid, and the shipyard finally saw the majestic nature of the cranes with light. The installation forms a continuum from that moment, and in 2026 the light reaches towards the sky, towards the future.

Rooms of Light is a light art installation that conveys a multiplicity of impressions in the viewer. The light is not only a visual element, but it also transforms the area into a new experience: The booths of the cranes are sources of light, akin to monumental lanterns or lighthouses.

The installation forms a whole, made up of structures of the cranes, illuminated by light in colours. The shifts in the light from darkness to colours draws up an image of rhythmic motion. The shifting light animates the cranes, diffusing the light onto Hietalahti. In Rooms of Light, the light transports the subject from the physical to a dreamlike space, into something that is neither real nor unreal.
